Dr. Balzer, a native of Hooker, Oklahoma, returned to the Panhandle area where he formerly practiced medicine in Hooker, Oklahoma, Hugoton and Liberal, Kansas. Graduating from Panhandle A & M College, he then attended the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, where he served as the Chief Flight Surgeon in the USAF. Dr. Balzer also taught at the School of Healthcare Sciences and received an Air Force Commendation Medal. Following a residency in Family Medicine at Scott AFB Regional Hospital, he served as Chief Resident and later obtained added Qualification in Geriatrics. He served as Chairman of the Family Medicine Department of BSA Hospital in Amarillo, Texas, Chief of Staff of the Covenant Hospital of Plainview, Texas, and most recently as Medical Director of the Senior Health Center of Edmond OU. Dr. Balzer received the Top Doctor Award for Geriatrics in Edmond for five consecutive years, and will bring his superior skill set in Geriatrics to the Panhandle. He held the position as Chief of Medicine at the OU Edmond Hospital for several years, and has a special interest in the care of chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.
Other interests of Dr. Balzer’s include astronomy, playing the guitar, banjo, and teaching theology. He was the primary author of the Right to Life Amendment for the Southern Baptist Convention of Texas and was a contributing producer for the ACU film, Choosing Life, the history of the pro-life movement.
Kelly is nationally certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and is licensed by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing. Prior to becoming a Nurse Practitioner, she served for 10 years as an RN in the operating room and the emergency department. A graduate from the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing, Kelly strives to maintain and improve the lives of all her patients. Prior to moving to the Oklahoma panhandle, she specialized in pediatrics and continues to enjoy seeing children and adults. Originally from New Mexico, Kelly has called Oklahoma home for over 11 years. A wife and mother, Kelly enjoys spending time with her husband, and family, playing with her two boys and spending time outdoors. She is also actively involved in the Guymon and Goodwell communities.
Kim was born and raised in Gruver, Texas. She is a nationally certified Family Nurse Practitioner from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and licensed by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing. Kim attended graduate school at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas. Before becoming a nurse practitioner, Kim had 26 years of clinical experience in maternal/infant and emergency medicine. She is a member of the Association of Oklahoma Nurse Practitioners. For the last five years, Kim has been the Director of Nursing at Panhandle Counseling and Health Center. Kim and her husband Grant, enjoy time with family and friends as well as traveling and spending time at the lake.
Kim will be providing care to patients of all ages. She has a special interest in integrative and holistic modalities. The fields of holistic and integrative medicine designate themselves as ones that address patients’ physical, emotional, spiritual, mental, social and environmental well-being. Along with traditional approaches, holistic and integrative medicine can include methods such as acupressure, healing touch, herbal therapy, and nutritional counseling.
Tasha Herrera was raised in Tyrone, Oklahoma. She is a nationally certified Family Nurse Practitioner from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and licensed by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing. She obtained her Master of Science in Nursing – Family Nurse Practitioner degree from Chamberlain University. Prior to becoming a nurse practitioner, Tasha has had experience in labor and delivery, community health, and family practice over the previous 10 years. For the past 3 years, Tasha has been a staff nurse at Panhandle Counseling and Health Center. Tasha enjoys spending time with her family, her animals, and going camping.
Tasha will be providing care to patients of all ages. She believes in the importance of patient-centered care and collaborative decision-making with patients based on current evidence-based practice.
Elizabeth Ogbonna, PHMNP-BC, is a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner with several years of experience in psychiatric health. Elizabeth is presently working with Panhandle Counseling and Health Center, Inc. as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. She acquired her master's degree from Walden University, her passion is improving the health and empowering her patients.
Our office setting is patient friendly and handicap accessible. Elizabeth treats mental illnesses of all age groups. She is a dedicated, goal oriented, empathetic and skillful professional whose goal is to contribute positively to the community. Elizabeth attends to each person as a unique individual focusing on helping them achieve the best treatment outcome. She is available in the office Monday through Friday, walk-ins are welcome.
Belinda received her Master Degree in Behavioral Science from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, OK in 1997 and achieved her status as an OK Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in 2000. In 2003 she completed the post-Master requirements for designation as a Registered Play Therapist. Belinda also holds Supervisor endorsement for both her LPC and RPT credentials.
Belinda utilizes an integrative approach in the delivery of trauma-informed behavioral health services to children and adults who may be experiencing a variety of life circumstances and diagnoses. She believes that through a collaborative relationship with their counselor, older children and adults can learn to positively change how negative perceptions and spontaneous thoughts about situations influences their emotions and behaviors. For children, Belinda utilizes play therapy because 'play is the language of children, and toys are their words.'
In addition to her counseling services, Belinda has provided continuing education trainings at both the state and national levels.
Tonjua Sherrill is a Marriage and Family Therapist licensed in Oklahoma and Kansas. Most of her 20+ year career has been spent working with youth and their families using a collaborative, strengths-based therapy approach. She focuses on providing a welcoming environment where people can feel safe unloading their “baggage” regardless of what brought them in for counseling.
Types of therapy Tonjua uses include Play Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Mindfulness to assist and support others to be the author of their own lives.
Tonjua sees children, teens, adults, geriatrics, couples and families. Tonjua addresses depression, anxiety, bipolar, grief, trauma, suicide, crisis, patterns of conflict in relationships and LGBTQIA+.
Tonjua enjoys spending time with her family, this includes her four-legged family members. Ginger and Abby are therapy dogs and at times accompany her to work and provide “therapy”. Tonjua enjoys connecting with others and feels privileged listening to others share their stories with her.
Melissa Duren is a certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor in the state of Oklahoma and a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor in the state of Texas. She has worked for 14 years in the field of substance abuse, both with youth and adults. Melissa utilizes a strength-based and cognitive approach in assisting those seeking recovery. She has experience both in in-patient and outpatient settings including work in specialized courts that promote individual treatment.
In addition to her work as a counselor, Melissa enjoys road trips, spending time with family, along with movies and podcasts about history, true crime, and pop culture.
